Science in the News
Some people are amused, while others are frightened by the science in the news.
Every day more discoveries are show in the newspaper and TV. New medical treatments and new discoveries about the DNA map occasionally give hope to those with cureless illnesses.
Sometimes science in the news could be dangerous, particularly biology and biotechnology discoveries.
The DNA modification of some species of domestic animals and vegetables created panic in the society. But who could really say that all the scientific advances are in fact wrong?
Not governmental organizations like Greenpeace, causes huge damage in some significant biotechnology experiments; creating a bad reaction in the society about artificial seeds consume. During the year 2002, 20% of the population stopped eating apples because of an article in the newspaper where it says that American apples where genetically modified.
They “forgot” to explain in that editorial that it was modified the DNA to prevent plagues that transport diseases to the fruit and could be contagious to the humans.
Science in the news also can help the Scientifics to be update in their fields, and that is great for the globalization of the information.
But the real question is How far the public should be informed? How should the science in the news be explained to the masses? Nobody wants to jeopardize the rights on public information, but it should be clearly controlled the way the information can be expose.
Editorials don’t need sensors as far as they will use their own sense of right and wrong. It shouldn’t be taken science in the news like any other sensationalist article in the newspaper, but as the most important articles to be strictly control.
It couldn’t be forgotten that sometimes life’s hopes depend on that, and after all, we live in a democratic world where it shouldn’t be necessary to sensor news.
